Safe energy and anti-nuclear activists are bringing the dangers of a nuclear ‘re-boot’ to the general public and to summit delegates in response to Massachusetts Governor Healey’s September 30th governors’ summit at UMass Lowell to promote nuclear power.

Governor Healey will host a New England governors’ nuclear energy summit at UMass Lowell on September 30, 2026, to advocate for “advanced nuclear and fusion technologies”, claiming they will provide reliable, affordable electricity. New England anti-nuclear and safe energy groups,  residents, ratepayers, and taxpayers strongly disagree. 

Shel Horowitz, a Clamshell Alliance rep to the Commonwealth Coalition for Democracy and Safe Energy (CCDSE) says, “We invite New England nuclear power opponents to bring their resistance to the governors’ summit by rallying nonviolently outside the event.” The rally starts at 8:00 am, September 30, at the Meehan Student Center, 100 Meehan Way (220 Pawtucket St.). 

The Clamshell Alliance, a network of long-time anti-nuclear activists, and Citizens Awareness Network (CAN), a New England grassroots anti-nuclear group, are two of the seven members of the CCDSE. 

Our message is: Nuclear power is undemocratic, unaffordable, unsustainable, and unsafe! In Massachusetts, our message to the Healey Administration is: Stop the Repeal of Chapter 503! Let the people decide!

Healey and the other New England governors are echoing false pro-nuclear claims by the US president and the nuclear industry for ‘advanced’ (read ‘unproven’) nuclear technologies. The nuclear industry hopes to make a killing by siphoning off government subsidies intended for solar and wind, claiming that nuclear power is affordable, green, and clean. These claims are false.

Gov. Healey is pushing for the repeal of a 1982 law, Chapter 503, passed by a referendum that requires strict safety measures, long-term storage of nuclear radioactive waste, and a voter referendum before any new nuclear facility can be built. Her repeal would fast-track unproven nuclear projects by eliminating the citizens’ right to decide. The energy bill with the repeal provision passed the MA House but not the Senate. It is now in conference committee, and we are asking Mass. residents to contact the six committee members to oppose the repeal. (See CAN alert here.)
